Descripción : The characteristics of the populations of street canines in the city of Quito are unknown, since no research has been done on them; for this reason, the objective of this study is to characterize, quantify and classify the street canine population, associating it with each of the 18 census sectors of the Northern Zone of the Metropolitan District of Quito. It is known that in developing countries, the uncontrollable growth of the number of street canines, has a negative impact not only on public health, but has also been associated with problems of socioeconomic, political and animal welfare. In compliance with the suggestion of the National Institute of Public Health Research (INSPI) in the present study the modified “capture and recapture” method was implemented for the purposes of the investigation. Through this method, an overall result of 1152 street canines and a recapture of 159 of them were obtained, which were excluded from the study, reaching a total of 993 street canines It is hoped that the results obtained will benefit both the population of street canines, and the related human population; Also providing with real numerical results that will contribute to the planning of future strategies for the control of urban population overpopulation. Likewise, with the information obtained, it will be possible to carry out a more accurate estimate of costs, for the development of preventive medicine campaigns: sterilization and vaccination and actions to raise awareness of society, for the practice of responsible pet ownership.
