Descripción : The microalga Chlorella sp. has assumed a great importance in recent years in research and development in many areas such as agricultural, food and environmental, for its great ability to remove heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd). Cd is a heavy metal that causes toxicity in the liver and kidneys in humans, it is found in soil and water sources, where it passes through the food chain until it is ingested by humans. Chlorella sp. has the characteristics for an effective bioremediation of this contaminant through its mechanisms of bioaccumulation and biosorption. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the capacity of removal of Cd in vitro by Chlorella sp. immobilized on sodium alginate using five concentrations of Cd solution (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5 parts per million). A pure microalgae culture was obtained with 3 percent Nitrofoska culture medium and scaled to a volume of 5 L in six flasks (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 and F6), of which the first four maintained aeration and artificial light led for 24 hours and the remaining natural light without aeration. The cell concentration was measured in 12 moments for a period of 21 days. To evaluate the elimination of Cd, 5 treatments given by alginate beads with a microalgae concentrate plus the different concentrations of Cd (0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 5 parts per million) were evaluated by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results were statistically evaluated using t Student test and analysis of variance. It was evidenced that there are significant statistical differences in the determination of the quality of the factors like the type of light and the presence of aeration. The highest removal percentage (91.50 percent) with alginate beads plus Chlorella sp. was produced with a content of 5 ppm of Cd followed by the concentration of 3 ppm (90.21 percent). When statistically evaluating all treatments were found significant differences in the concentration of Cd removal.
