The present study has as main objective to determine the influence of land use on the physicochemical of water and the composition of benthic macroinvertebrates at the rivers Cariyaqu and Huarmiyaqu. These rivers are located at Carchi, Ecuador and the sampling sites were carried out between 3044 and 3384 meters above sea level. The sampling of water, macroinvertebrates and soil was carried out on 16 and 18 of April 2015, by the team of the Center for Research, Studies and Development of Engineering (CIEDI) conformed by teachers and students. This study demonstrated the influence of anthropic activities on the ecological quality of rivers; as well as the importance of the conservation of the riverside forest. The methodology for this study consisted on identifying three main types of land usage: Reference lands, agricultural lands used for potatoes crops, and finally the lands dominated by grasslands. To identify changes of the river quality at each land use, the IHF and QBR indexes were used to determine the quality of the fluvial habitat and the riparian forest quality for each land use. Also the physicochemical parameters and the Community of macroinvertebrates were studied. The macroinvertebrates community was used as bio indicator to determine the degree of anthropic influence at the analyzed rivers. The macroinvertebrates were collected in the field phase, and then they were studied at the laboratory to determine the density, composition and abundance of the macroinvertebrate communities at a family level; to apply the ABI and IMEERA indexes, that analyze the ecological quality of the rivers with great precision, from 2000 meters above sea level. The physicochemical parameters showed an increase of the organic matter in the intervened zones; the quality of riparian forest and the quality of river habitats has been compromised at potato and pasture land uses; because of the abuse of agrochemicals, fertilizers. The macroinvertebrates community experimented alterations in their density, abundance and composition at the intervened zones, due to the changes of water quality caused by the anthropic influence. Also this study demonstrated the ability of buffer zones to maintain a good ecological quality of the rivers at the reference zones.en
