dc.descriptionObjective: In the scientific and socio-environmental field, there has historically been an interest and the growing need to study and discuss the possible risks associated with the use of chemicals on human health. Chemicals are presumed to cause several pathologies as endocrine disruptors. As they are able to act at such low doses and have repercussions on the reproductive system, it is important to know that these can cause adverse and possibly irreversible effects on health. A review of the systematic literature on associations between prenatal and maternal exposure to endocrine disruptors was performed through this research project. Study methodology and materials: This document is the result of a systematic search of scientific articles from May to December 2016 by consulting the PubMed, SciELO and Google Academic databases in English and Spanish. Medical articles published from 2003 to 2016 were reviewed. Abstracts and complete articles were found using the descriptors: endocrine disruptors, environmental factors, occupational exposure, infertility, reproductive disorders, pesticides, among others. Result: Fifteen articles were selected, in which the relationship between exposure to endocrine disruptors and the development of alterations in the reproductive system was evidenced, especially if their exposure was prenatal. Positive records were found for congenital urologic malformations, such as hypospadias, cryptorchidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome and others, which are detailed in this article. It should be emphasized that the study shows that its incidence increases when combined with other factors, such as pre-term delivery, tobacco use, obesity during pregnancy, and others. As a result of these pathologies, the annual cost in public health has increased by the misuse of endocrine disruptors such as pesticides.
