dc.description | Pain was defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. In dental practice, it is common to treat analgesics to relieve pain in patients who have undergone a major dental procedure, in order to prevent or reduce the pain that always accompanies any surgical procedure and to optimize the postoperative recovery process. In order to determine the main therapeutic options available to the dentist for the management of postoperative pain, this bibliographic review was performed. Sixty-six indexed articles from the last five years were taken into account. The main findings were that the drugs most used in dentistry are the following: COX-1: ketorolac, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen. COX-2: colecoxib. Opioids: Tramadol, Codeine and Morphine. Corticoids: Methylprednisolone and dexamethasone. Combinations of NSAID with corticosteroids or opioids are acceptable. It can be concluded that there are three pharmacological groups that are mainly used in the management of postoperative pain in dentistry, these are NSAID (COX-1 and COX-2), corticosteroids and opioid analgesics, each with its precise indications and contraindications. The use of the anticipatory analgesia has very good results in the prevention of postoperative pain in dentistry; COX-2 and opioid inhibitors are used primarily for this purpose. | en |
