This investigative journalism piece is an analysis on the uses and meaning of ayahuasca from the point of view of the shuar culture. What the person seeks when drinking the potion made from their sacred plant, and his or her interpretations are about the visions that this generates. This project also raises from a theoretical investigation on ayahuasca from its different refinements, its impact and influence on the identity of the shuar community, and the cultural heritage that this represents for the native communities as far as for the reenactment of their memories and strengthening of their roots. The primary axis that this thesis implements is the link between cultural elements such as the theory of symbolic interactionism, concept of identity and collective memory, indigenous worldview and the perspective on sacred ceremonies. Acknowledging that the human being manages a state of conscious and unconsciousness, in a material and spiritual form of life, it is important when analyzing the meaning that the transformation of the self has for the native community, and their value of nature and soul. For this, symbolic interactionism from the point of view of the author Erving Goffman covers an important aspect of the investigation, thus the focus of the “behind the scenes” in a scene where the human being feels free to act and feel as he or she pleases, is the moment when ayahuasca goes into effect. In a parallel universe that lives in the mind but is connected to a spiritual universe as well, the ritual turns into a sacred moment, which turns into memory and then finally becomes the indigenous identity. Al last, the communication elements that present this study are a way to reaffirm the context of the theoretical investigation and the investigation of the landscape in which the shuar opens the doors of his or her nationality to learn more in depth about their beliefs, weaknesses and strengths, and this way value the wealth of the knowledge of the native communities.en
