dc.description | The following academic article explores the concept of Responsibility to Protect, a contemporary principle of international law which has been debated since the report of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) was proposed by the Canadian government in 2000 regarding the responsibility to protect. The concept Responsibility to Protect states that all States must protect populations at risk from serious human rights violations specifically crimes against humanity, genocide, ethnic cleansing and war crimes. First, an analysis will be conducted of the chosen references which will be the main tool used along the academic paper. A presentation of the theoretical discussion will follow which will identify the main dimensions in which the concept of Responsibility to Protect is present. After, a case study will be presented to analyse the scope of the concept, the case chosen for this academic paper is the case of Syria and its civil war under the regime of President Al Assad. A critical analysis will be presented of the events that have taken place in Syria and the actions taken by the international community with concepts such as national sovereignty and international intervention and their importance against the responsibility to protect human rights violations. Finally, the academic article will present a conclusion regarding the importance of the concept and the scope of the Responsibility to Protect. | en |
