In the last years, the technological and scientific advances in veterinary medicine has given place to an increment in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac illnesses in canines. The present study analyzed the frequency of cardiac illnesses diagnosed with echocardiography by the service of the veterinary hospital Lucky, carried out for the Dr. Javier Rodríguez V. , between 2009 and 2015. 309 clinical files of heart disease patients were obtained. The data was grouped by the variables of age, sex and race, and were compared by heart disease frequency. For the age variable, it was observed an rate of 75.73 % (234/309), in the frequency of cardiopathy in eldery (geriatric) patients, followed for adults with 15.21 % (47/309), juveniles with 4.21 % (13/309) and puppies with 2.27 % (7/309). No data was registered in 10% (31/309) of the cases. In the case of the geriatric patients the diseases of major frequency were valvular mitral insufficiency 70.51 % (165/234), pulmonary arterial hypertension 10.26 % (24/234) and tricuspid valve insufficiency 8.12 % (19/234). For the sex variable a 55.02 % frequency of heart disease was observed (170/309) for males, and 42.39% (131/309) for females. The diseases with significant difference in frequency between sexes were persistent ductus arteriosus PDA) with 83.33 % (5/6) for females and 16.67% (1/6) for the males, and insufficiency of the mitral valve (IVM) with a frequency of 59.69 % (114/192) for males and 37.17% (71/309) for females. Finally, for the race variable the following frequencies of heart disease were: mixed 15.2 % (47/309), French poodle 14.5 % (45 / 309), Cocker spaniel 9.7 % (30 / 309), Pekinesse 7.1 % (22 / 309), Schnauzer 6.8 % (21/309), Dachshund 6.1 % (19 / 309), Golden retriever 5.2 % (16 / 309), Shih Tzu 4.2 % (13/309), Labrador retriever 4.2 % (13/309) and Boxer 2.3 % (12 / 309). Additionally, a database with information about canine cardiopathy frequency n the metropolitan district of Quito was setup. With this a precedent of the existence of the described illnesses was created in order to emphasize the importance of the opportune diagnosis in the veterinary practice.en
