Descripción : The Food label gives information about the manufacturing and nutrient contents that a product has. The laws in Ecuador have been changed in the past years, leading to the implementing of the food labeling technical regulation act RTE-5103 being enforced. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the compliance the products to the new labeling act. The products that are registered for human consumption were classified in 12 categories and 62 criteria divided into four groups: General information format; ingredients format; nutritional facts format and traffic light label format. The criteria were used to establish the compliance of the products according to the regulation. In addition, we analyzed the reasons for changing sanitary registration of products from 2002 to 2013. Descriptive statistics were applied and an analysis of variance (p=0, 05) was used to establish the difference between three nutrients of the traffic light labeling. The average compliance of the claims, ingredients, nutritional facts and traffic light labeling formats was 0,89 ±0,04. Compare with the nutritional facts adaptation for the traffic light labeling that had an average compliance of 0,88 ±0,09. The 88% of products presented consistency between the claims and the ingredients. The 85% of the products presented consistency between the claims and the nutritional facts. On the other hand, 79% of the products presented any consistency between nutritional facts and ingredients. The compliance of the claims of the three nutrients, sugar, fat and salt, found in the traffic light labelling is in 580 of the 767 products analyzed in the investigation. The food technical requirements has the obligation to be fulfilled by everyone, but some products are not obeying the regulation. Leading to a lot of food packages are not allowing compliance to be made with the purpose of the law, which is giving good and accurate information to help consumers decide which products to buy.
