Dengue is considered a public health problem around the world, in both, tropical and subtropical areas. It is a disease that causes about 50 million cases annually worldwide and possesses no specific treatment. Virological surveillance based on a vector is a necessary tool to strengthen the surveillance system of a disease, and it also contributes to the development of an early warning system able to generate predictions with more efficiency. Since the Ecuadorian surveillance system performs only passive surveillance of dengue, it has great weaknesses for identifying effectively circulating serotypes during inter-epidemic periods. The aim of this study was to identify different serotypes in vectors collected in the towns of Nueva Loja, in the province of Sucumbíos and Esmeraldas, in the province of Esmeraldas, by extracting total RNA and RT-PCR amplification.en
