This study aims to explain the causes of the Civil War in Syria from an analysis of the demographic and geographical factors that characterize the Middle East and the artificial border boarders imposed by England and France through the secret agreement Sykes Picot 1916, and by its formalization in the Sevres Treaty of 1920. This was one of negotiated peace treaties of Paris in 1919. On the one hand, in Europe, the high population density in relation to the small territory increased the presence of wars between states in reason of subsistence. On the contrary, in the Middle East and Africa the extend territory, abundant natural resources and low population density allowed these countries to have peaceful relations between states. Therefore, there are not important sources of tax revenue. Indeed, income must be obtained by selling raw materials becoming rentier states which has generated less public participation in government. On the other hand, the creation of artificial borders by France and Britain divided the territories without taking into consideration important factors such as the diverse ethnic and religious composition of the Middle East. That has caused internal conflicts in most countries and has promoted the existence of various separatist groups. For instance Syria, there is a strong religious and historical rivalry between the Alawites (faction of Shiism), those in power and Sunni (governed). Finally, the result of the study is that Syria can be regarded as a failed state and divided in which the government cannot exercise the legitimate monopoly of force. It also shows how the different cultural aspects is important to the state cohesion. Moreover, the intervention of other abroad countries that have different realities affects negatively to others populations.en
