Resumen : La Enfermedad Poliquística Renal o PKD, es la enfermedad hereditaria más común en gatos persas y sus cruces...
Descripción : Polycystic Kidney Disease or PKD is the most common inherited disease in Persian cats and their crosses. PKD results from a mutation in the PKD1 gene, which synthesizes an abnormal protein called polycystin that is responsible for the development of renal cysts in this diseas. The presence of cysts, trigger progressive and irreversible damage of renal tissue, often resulting in advanced stages of chronic renal failure. For this reason, it is important an early diagnosis and selection of non-active carriers of PKD1 gene for the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of occurrence of PKD in Persian cats and their crosses in the city of Quito and valleys, through ultrasound as a reliable method of detection for renal cysts in individuals diagnosed from age of 6 months. The study was cross-sectional applied during a period of approximately 7 months, with a total sample of 100 Persian cats and crosses, which were selected through a non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The incidence of PKD in Persian cats and their crosses was estimated at 34%.The origin of cats (breeding and not breeding) turned out to be significant for the presentation of PKD (P | X2 | <0.00). Furthermore, no significance was found with the variables age (young, adult and geriatric), race (Persian pure, crosses) and gender (male, female). However, trends in presentation of PKD increased with the age. Moreover, by assessing serum creatinine, proteinuria and urinary density, was determined that positive individuals showed significant PKD kidney failure (renal failure stage 3), geriatric individuals being the most affected. Through this study it was determined a high frequency of PKD in Persian cats and their crosses in the city of Quito and its valleys. The development of cysts is more common in elderly cats, who also showed marked kidney failure. The eradication of the disease can occur through active selection of non-carriers of the PKD1 gene.
