Expanded polyestyrene is a polymer known for being a contaminant due to its slow degradation. Developing an alternative for this is a possible solution for eliminating the environmental impact caused by the expanded polystyrene. This investigation aims to develop a material alternative to the expanded polystyrene, as support material for the agroindustrial use, from fungal mycelium of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus djamor, using crop waste from Ecuador for the fungal growth.Identifying the optimal substratum of mycelium growth was based on the biological efficiency that resulted from the combination between the fungus, the substratum and the method of sowing. In an experimental level the fungus that were used were Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus djamor, the substratums were: coffee peel (coffea canephora), banana leafs (Musa paradisiaca) and barley chaff (Hordeum vulgare); the method of sowing of the fungus was: in sawdust or seed. Considerating all of these variables, a mycelium growth guide was established. A comparison was made according to the biological efficiency of each substratum combinated with each fungus and the method of sowing, resulting to be the best Pleurotus ostreatus, in barley chaff and method of sowing in seed. This combination had a biological efficiency of 70,7%. This tests were made under the same environmental conditions. Afterwards, once the highest biological efficiency was determined, the development of the supporting materials was done. After the fruit transporting trays were build up with positive results and a 21 day duration without contamination of the fruit and a mechanical resistance of perforation and deformation higher than the witness. The seedbed showed a lower mortality rate in the transplant compared to the witness because the plant didn’t suffer any stress because it wasn’t manipulated. Pleurotus ostreatus shows to be an effective alternative to the expanded polystyrene due to its physical, chemical and optimizing of waste according to its mycelium growth.en
