dc.description | Cortaderia jubata is an invasive plant known to displace native vegetation for example: shrubbery and woody plants. Biological control is a possible solution to eliminate this weed from native plantations avoiding secondary effects that are caused by physic, mechanic or chemical methods. Ustilago quitensis is a Basidiomyceto type of fungi that invades different parts of the plant C. jubata for which is it considered as a possible agent of biocontrol. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the biological effect that U. quitensis has over the weed C. jubata. Temperature and media composition conditions were evaluated in laboratory level to obtain the major biomass concentration of U. quitensis. A protocol for identifying the percentage of incidence of the phytopathogen over the plant was established. The relationship between the spores concentration of the fungi in inoculums and the incidence percentage of the phytopathogen in the plant was analyzed using Neubauer chamber. As well the incidence percentage in different parts of the plant were determined using different methods of infection (direct application or aspersion). It was obtained a major mycelial growth at 25 °C in vitro. The identified spores type were: teliospore and basiospore. Phytopathogen fungi showed a major concentration of biomass at 4 days of incubation in liquid media (0.0042 g biomass /μL). Significant differences were observed between concentrations C1 (818.000 conidios/μL), C2 (360.000 conidios/μL), and C3 (122.000 conidios/μL), C4 (38.000 conidios/μL). Finally, a 94% incidence of U. quitensis in flower and 50% in leafs with concentration C1 by aspersion was evidenced, whereas direct application (0.0042 g biomasa/μL), the incidences was 44% on flowers and 18% on leafs. U. quitensis showed a major incidence using aspersion on the plant representing major effect on the flowers. This phytopathogen fungi is proposed as a possible weed control in Ecuador. | en |
