dc.description | Since ancient times honey has been used for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and therapeutic properties, being used now a day in veterinary for healing wounds by second intention, for its medicinal property. This study evaluated the antibacterial capacity of commercial honey produced in different areas of the provinces of Pichincha and Carchi. A representative sample of 12 monofloral honeys where analyzed, avocado (5 samples), alfalfa (5 samples) and eucalyptus (2 samples), making dilutions at 25%, 50%, 75% and a concentration of pure honey. Samples were evaluated in duplicate in ATCC strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis using Agar diffusion test. The antimicrobial activity was estimated qualitatively by measuring inhibition halos. Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR), was used for measure the amount of phenolic compounds in honey that inhibit oxidation reagent and was determined spectrophotometrically at 760 nm, based on a pattern of Gallic acid. The results revealed that the honey bee from different areas of the province of Carchi and Pichincha, showed antimicrobial activity and antioxidant capacity, in greater or lesser degree. Dilutions made influenced in the antimicrobial activity. | en |
