Resumen : El estimulante de colonias de granulocitos, una citoquina producida usualmente por el organismo, ha sido actualmente empleado en su forma análoga para el tratamiento de neutropenias de distinto origen tanto en medicina humana como en medicina veterinaria...
Descripción : The granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a cytokine usually produced by the body has been currently used in its analog form for treatment of neutropenia of various origin both in human medicine and in veterinary medicine. Although the results have been very variable, recent studies have found benefits that allow the clinician to consider the drug as a possible solution for different types of neutropenia. This research aims to observe the behavior of neutrophils after the short-term treatment of filgrastim in those cats FLeV o FIV positive. A total of 7 patients (n = 7), 6 FLeV positive and one FeLV- FIV positive, were treated in different veterinary clinics and hospitals in the city of Quito. When starting therapy the first of three clinical examinations were done to determine the condition of the patient, also a sampling for differential blood count. The clinical examination and the sampling were repeated on day 5 (end of treatment) and day 10 ( 5days after end of treatment). To assess the effect of filgrastim on neutrophil count of all patients, the ANOVA statistical test was performed, which allowed us to see the distribution of the middle of the 3 blood count test evaluated on the group of patients. These results were statistically homogeneous, despite different distributions observed in cell counts. In conclusion, short term administration of filgrastim may be useful to reverse neutropenia in cats with retrovirus infection, as long as the treatmnt is controlled and the long term administration is avoided.
