Descripción : Vaginal delivery has been studied extensively during centuries, however, the study of new methods for termination of pregnancy has experienced many twists, but in the past 25 years many great developments have been described. Among the main methods, we studied childbirth in water. It has been shown to have adequate security during labor and benefits marked on the mother, among which pain relief. The present research objective is to describe and determine the benefits and possible complications of childbirth in water, both mothers and newborn infants in a retrospective cohort of more than 600 women. In order to support our findings, an advanced search of all bibliographic information available in indexed databases such as PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, among others performed. After making a thorough understanding of the different results published analysis, we conclude that although the water birth has been associated with several including side events postnatal infections, drowning and death, the most serious studies, including a meta-analysis reported a significant increase in negative events on water birth on mother or newborn in comparison to traditional delivery. On the other hand, there is positive evidence of benefits of water birth, among which include pain reduction, work shorter delivery and avoid the use of analgesia and the clear reduction of unnecessary episiotomies or subjective increase in relation of satisfaction of labor in general. In our study and after analyzing 666 patients, no significant differences on an increased risk of morbidity and mortality maternal or neonatal. In a period of one year, patients showed better rates observed for the completion of pregnancy vaginally, and total decrease the use of unnecessary episiotomies.
