Descripción : Nowadays, prevention in dentistry is essential. The most important thing to know about prevention is toothbrushing in order to avoid tooth decay and periodontal disease due to accumulation of dental biofilm. This preventive aspect that is imposed over the treatment must be applied to everyone without restrictions, but taking into consideration the special needs of each individual, so in this investigation has been applied a comparative study between manual and electric toothbrush in children with Down Syndrome because they are a susceptible population and they suffer from a decrease in fine motor skills that may affect their performance during toothbrushing, in order to determine whether there is a difference in the effectiveness of reducing the levels of biofilm using both Brush types. The investigation was conducted with 30 children in ages between 6 to 12 years who regularly attend the Foundation for children with Down syndrome “Corazón de María” located in the city of Pelileo, Tungurahua. Dental biofilm measurement was performed using the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) before and after brushing with a manual toothbrush, and the same procedure was performed with electric toothbrush on a different date. The results were favorable for electric toothbrush, due to lower rates of biofilm after use.
