Descripción : Tooth color currently is very important for patients and one of the factors that determines a good esthetic result in the restorations. Objective: To evaluate the ability of students of Dentistry at the University of the Americas for the selection of tooth color. Material and Methods: This clinical experimental cross-sectional study evaluated 95 undergraduate students from Clinic two to detect changes in color vision with Ishihara Test. To identify the ability to organize the color scale Vita Classical from light to dark, every color guide was covered and encrypted. Students were placed in the order from lighter to darker at its discretion. Finally, selected 50 students to assess tooth color with the subjective method of 30 teeth in 10 patients. Data were analyzed with Chi-square. Results: 75.8 percent of students matched all the Ishihara plates, the remaining percentage had more difficulty red green perception, and however this difference was not statistically different. It was observed greater ability to identify guides B1, A1 (light), A4, C4 (dark) in the correct positions of the Vita Classical scale. Selecting color of teeth, students tended to perceive lighter pieces when in fact they were identified by the observer calibrated as darker parts. Conclusions: No deficiency color to identify the students tested. The lightest and darkest ends of the scale are the easiest to put in the right position according to the organization by value of the Vita Classical scale. The students better identified clear teeth than dark teeth.
