Resumen : Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de estomatitis subprotésica asociada a candida albicans en pacientes portadores de prótesis total superior, en centros de atención geriátrica del Valle de los Chillos...
Descripción : Objective: To determine the prevalence of denture stomatitis associated with candida albicans in patients with total upper denture at geriatric care centers in the Valle de los Chillos. Methods: observational, descriptive cross-sectional study, a sample of all patients who have full upper denture prosthesis and whom are also carriers of denture stomatitis (n equal 32) are taken. An Intra-oral clinical examination was performed to evaluate the presence of stomatitis, (to include the state of adaptation of the prosthesis). Test strips were used to measure pH Palatine, gentian violet 1 percent was also used to assess the rate of plate dentures and palatal microbiological sampling; geriatric patients without dentures, without stomatitis, sub-prosthetic, immunodeficient, and with chronic illness are excluded. Authorization is formally requested at the geriatric centers. Consent is verified through standard compliance procedures. Data was collected on a numbered card and processed in SPSS V22. Results: 62.5 percent of patients with signs of stomatitis are the female, 53 percent of patients diagnosed with candida albicans have palatal acid pH; X2 equal 4,234 and the significance of the level is (p equal 0.040), an association exists between acid pH and candida albicans. A total of 43.8 percent of patients with a positive diagnosis of Candida show a poor plate index to the evaluation board, this is stated as X2 equal 5,236 and the significance of the level is (p equal 0.0221). This confirms an association between poor plaque index and the diagnosis of candida albicans. 9.4 percent of patients who are diagnosed with candida albicans can be characterized as having a dental prosthesis mismatch, X2 equal 2,796 and the significance level of (p equal 0.094), no association between the prosthesis mismatch and diagnosis of candida albicans. Conclusions: a high prevalence of denture stomatitis associated with candida albicans is present in nursing homes in the Valle de los Chillos, the female gender shows this pathology more frequently ; the presence of Candida albicans can be associated with palatal acid pH and poor hygiene of the prosthesis, while there is no association with prosthesis mismatch.
