This study analyzes the contribution of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Treaty of commerce of the people (ALBA) in Ecuadorian trade. For which, the gravitational model proposed by Jan Tinbergen in 1962 is used; a practical and state-of-the-art model that allows the user to analyze commerce between countries and assess the contributions from trade agreements or from qualitative characteristics from each country. For the present analysis, the model was used with 26 countries that hold a constant and representative level of commercial interaction with Ecuador from 1990 until 2013. With this sample, a dummy variable is used to contain the effect of Ecuador incorporation to ALBA in 2009. For better results, this study uses a Panel data model with fixed effects consideration for the estimation. This usage of the model allowed considering the existence of variables that are normally fixed in time, like language or distance, to quantify the effect that ALBA has on the commercial flows; as well as the mentioned variables. The final results of the proposed model show a significant and negative contribution in the Ecuadorian commerce from the countries members of ALBA. The analysis determines that the contribution from ALBA is significant and negative, which can answer to the short time of maturation of this agreement; as well as the fall of commercial flows between Ecuador and the members of ALBA, especially Venezuela, from 2011 until 2013, with a slight recovery in 2014.en
