Descripción : This study determines the influence of the agriculture and livestock rearing on the quality of the water in two watersheds: Curiyacu and Huarmiyacu, of the basin of the river El Ángel in the province of Carchi. In each watershed was identified the uses of the most important land (pasture, potato and reference). We selected 5 sampling sites of water for each use, of which 3 corresponded to the Curiyacu and two the Huarmiyacu. The water quality was assessed by comparing the results of the analysis of the water with national and international standards; we also determined the influence of the quality of riverside woodland (index of vegetative cover QBR) in the properties of water studied and analyzed as the alteration of the physical-chemical properties of the soil by the change of use explain the quality of the water in the area. The results indicate that the electrical conductivity is the only parameter that does not comply with the regulations in the watershed of the Huarmiyacu. While in the Curiyacu, copper fails in grass and potato with the 50 percent limit on the Maximum Allowable (PML); the dissolved oxygen (DO) with lower values from 4 to 56 percent, fecal coliforms exceeded 75 and 100 percent in populated areas in the watershed. On the other hand, in the reference sites, all water quality parameters with the exception of cooper complied with national and international standards. The QBR in reference sites indicates that these are highly conserved to obtain the highest rating. The statistical analyses for main components are determined that the parameters of water quality near the reference sites were similar between them unlike sites for potato and grass. This was corroborated by the analysis of a randomized complete block that established highly significant differences in the mean values of OD of the reference sites in relation to potato and grass. The OD in the water also was explained in an 80 percent for the contents of clay, organic matter, silt and apparent density of the soil. Therefore we can conclude that the watershed of the Curiyacu presents greater pollution than Huarmiyacu and the OD was the parameter of the water most affected by the land-use change of reference to grass or potato in the watershed of the Curiyacu.
