dc.descriptionThis research presents an analysis of distribution and diversity of chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae) at the genus level of the rivers of the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ). The Ecuadorian Museum of Natural Sciences sampled rivers belonging to the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ) in an altitude range between 1000 msnm and 3633 msnm. The macroinvertebrates were collected separated and identified at family level. They selected 37 sites without apparent anthropogenic disturbance, between the years 2007 and 2012. Macroinvertebrates were collected separated and identified at family level. The members of the family Chironomidae were provided by the MECN for this research. Chironomids were separated into larval morphotypes, later to make microscopic preparations and identify different taxa. We analyzed 780 individuals distributed in five subfamilies (Tanypodinae, Podonominae, Diamesinae, Orthocladinae and Chironominae) recording 36 taxa. For statistical analysis the localities were grouped into four altitudinal gradients (1000-1700 msnm, 1701-2400 msnm, 2401-3100 msnm and 3101-3800 msnm) and three vegetable formations (lower montane evergreen forest, montane cloud forest, upper montane evergreen forest). With these factors the community composition of Chironomidae, which included: taxonomic richness, diversity indices, relative abundance and frequency were analyzed. It was determined that the Orthocladinae subfamily is the most abundant and most taxa richness of both vegetable formation and altitudinal gradient. It was evident that the genus Parametriocnemus establishing itself as the most representative of the research, other genus as Cricotopus and Polypedilum also presented an abundance and considerable frequency. It was determined that the rivers that are at lower altitudes are more diverse than those located at higher altitudes. Besides using statistical analysis it was determined significant differences Chironomidae community regarding the altitudinal gradient and vegetation formation, demonstrating that the structure and composition of chironomids are directly related to the type of dominant vegetation in the riverbed.en
