dc.descriptionColostrum is the secretion accumulated in the mammary gland during the last weeks of pregnancy. Colostrum, besides being the first food for the neonate, confers passive immunity because it contains high levels of immunoglobulins (Ig). The aim of this study was to identify blood parameters and maternal factors that influence the quality of colostrum. The research was carried out at Livestock Program of Santa Catalina Experimental Station, in dairy farm of Unit for Research Support, from May 2014 to December 2014. Blood samples (plasma and serum) of cows (various breeds and ages) were collected from a tail vein 15 days before expected calving (n equal 39). Blood samples were immediately sent to the laboratory for analysis. After parturition, colostrum samples (n equal 39) were analyzed by using a hydrometer (colostrometer) to estimate the amount of Ig per milliliter based on the specific gravity. The concentration of colostral Ig varied among animals, with a mean of 97 mg/ml (SD equal 28 mg/ml) and a range of 30 mg/ml to 160 mg/ml. In total, 92.31% of samples contained greater than 50 mg/ml of Ig, which is considered as colostrum of high quality. The specific gravity of colostrum was influenced by the levels of cholesterol in the blood of the cow (p smaller than 0.05), hemoglobin (p smaller than 0.05), red blood cells (p smaller than 0.05), phosphorus (p smaller than 0.10), globulins (p smaller than 0.10), platelets (p smaller than 0.10) and blood urea nitrogen (p smaller than 0.20) according to the multiple regression model. By applying an analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was found that maternal factors such as parity and age of the cow at calving did not influence the amount of immunoglobulins in bovine colostrum. The results of this study indicate that colostral specific gravity can be influenced by many factors and that calostrogénesis process is characterized by the transfer of components from the bloodstream of the mother to the mammary gland.en
