Descripción : The following study was design according to a literature review and a field research in an effort to comprehend the phenomenon of tattoos from a very specific feature the gaze that invokes. Among the studies reviewed by the author of this work, it was found that the contemporary investigations referring tattoos are focus on the risk behaviors associated whit it, leaving aside the subjective experience of the person who carries the tattoo. Considering this subjective experience, this research has taken into account the identification of the tattoo carrier with the gaze that is brought upon him by such tattoo. From the qualitative approach, applying content analysis, this work used semi structure interviews in order to explore gaze´s function of identification, considering the tattoo as a mediator to invoke that gaze, from the tattoo carrier´s perspective, taking into account a sample of 8 participants. With this objective in mind, the author pretends to analyze the importance of gaze as a motivation to get a tattoo, and investigate the role played by a tattoo as a mean of relationship with the other. The results suggest that there is a driving principle in the practice of tattoos, while psychoanalysis speaks of drive. Other results suggest the presence of an ominous experience during the first days or weeks after getting a tattoo in the skin or the body. While talking about the body, is in this place where an affective significant experience is represented. When talking about the skin, it was concluded that it´s in this particular organ where the initial identification through gaze takes place. These results allowed concluding that there is an identification by the bearer of a tattoo, both with the image imprinted in his body as well as with the gazes which he or she receives and interprets in order to validate whatever the tattoo is trying to say.
