dc.description | This textual investigation analyzes Law 19.172 which upon its approval, legalized the use of marijuana in Uruguay in 2013. This research will be compared to Max Weber’s theory on the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force. Drug trafficking is considered one of the most concerning issues of today’s society. It involves discussing topics such as safety, violence, poor health and the economy. According to data from the U.N., this illegal business is a $312-billion-dollar industry, $120 billion of which goes to drug traffickers. The mafia have strong connections that monopolize the market and they promote human trafficking and the illegal sale of arms. This study analyzes the situation of Uruguay. The “Mujica Law” (19.172) does not focus on drugs but rather seeks to avoid the propagation of drug trafficking in the nation. Its plan also aims for the state to be responsible in production, storage and sales.
