Descripción : Assessing the existence of teeth sensitivity in patients put through two different whitening techniques, one of them by using photo-activation and the other one without using it. Materials methods: 38 patients were selected aged 18 to 35 years, of both genders, attending to dental clinics of the Universidad de las Américas and that willingly accepted participating in the study. They were shared in a random order in two equal groups; one of them using hydrogen peroxide with photo-activation (pH + light) and the other one without photoactivation (PH-light). 35% hydrogen peroxide was used, (Whiteness HP by FGM) and the halogen light was placed for 10 minutes (30 s per teeth) in every placement of the whitening agent through a light dispensing equipment (LITEX 680A by 3M) with an intensity of 400mW/cm2. Results: The existence of a statistically significant relation was demonstrated between photo activation variables and post operatory sensitivity, which means that such variables are dependant, which in turn means that patients sensitivity did depended on the technique used; hence, halogen light on dental enamel generates high sensitivity levels, both immediately and 48 hours after having conducted dental whitening p 0.05 were obtained. A higher density was seen in sensitivity sensation for the group with photo-activation, described as severe with a significance p 0.006. The final treatment step, includes teeth washing in cold water, it was determined that the group submitted to photo activation pain occurred in 89.5%,while in the group without photo activation, it was only 26.3%, with a significance of p same 0, which confirmed that pain sensitivity extent depends on the technique used. Conclusion: The use of photo-activation to speed-up dental whitening generates a higher dental sensitivity because it causes increase of ionic activity of the whitening agent.
