Descripción : Introduction; A third part of the population in the United States, USA presents alterations in the duration of sleep and 20 percent sleep less than 6 hours. There are studies that suggest that sleep deprivation; SD increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including acute myocardial infarction; AMI. However, there is limited information on this relationship in the male population. Objective; To determine if there is an association between SD and AMI in the US male population in 2018. Materials and methods; Secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study using the database of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System; BRFSS of the United States during 2018 where men older than 18 years were included; n equal to 197412. Those with a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use and those who were missing were excluded. SD less than 6 hours / night was determined as the exposure variable and AMI as the outcome. The confounding variables were age, race / ethnicity, diabetes, obesity, cerebrovascular disease, and tobacco use. Adjusted and unadjusted logistic regression models were used, calculating the odds ratio; OR and the 95 percent confidence interval; CI ranges. Results; It was identified that 8.3 percent of the patients with AMI had SD and 34.7 percent of the patients with SD had AMI. The population with DS had a higher risk of AMI compared to those without it; OR 1.25; 95 percent CI 1.19, 1.32. More sleep deprivation in patients who use tobacco with 20.8% compared to those who do not use 12.6 percent. Conclusions; There is an association between SD and having presented AMI in the male population. Take into consideration to promote better sleep habits and thus reduce the risk of AMI. It is recommended for further investigations to carry out a prospective cohort study where it can be evaluated if there is a causal association between SD and AMI.
