Descripción : OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of myofascial release on the skeletal muscle system. METHODS: A search strategy was performed on three databases: PubMed, Science Direct, and EBSCO. Randomized controlled trials were included that determined the effects of the application of the manual myofascial release (MRF) technique on the skeletal muscle system in the English language and over the past five years. The total obtained from included studies were validated according to the eleven criteria of the PEDro scale. RESULTS: The strategy obtained a total of seven hundred and eighty articles in three databases and after performing the filters was concluded with a total of fourteen studies. Of the total of fourteen studies analyzed, ten showed a significant decrease in pain, three did not denote changes and one did not evaluate the variable in different musculoskeletal pathologies. As for the ROM, five articles showed a significant increase of it, one showed no changes. In flexibility only one test assessed the present variable resulting in increase. Finally, a total of five articles assessed disability and quality of life where all five demonstrated significant improvement. With this data it is resolved that the myofascial release significantly decreases pain in pathologies and ROM, flexibility and disability and quality of life have good results even though their research is little. CONCLUSIONS: Research about manual MFR applied by a professional in the musculoskeletal system and as an individual technique in rehabilitation protocols is very limited in the past years. However, based on the analysis of this research it is concluded that manual MFR is an effective technique in pain relief of different pathologies, trials that assessed disability and quality of life achieved a hundred percent successful results and those who evaluated ROM resulted mostly in an increase of it, however both variables are evaluated in very few trials to infer their effectiveness due to myofascial release and the flexibility variable has almost no research to conclude its benefit.
