Introduction: Adolescents with different sexual orientation have higher levels of depressive symptoms compared with heterosexual adolescents. The prevalence of depression in adolescents was 3.5 percent in the United States between the years 2005- 2011. The rate of depression is 8.2 percent and in homosexuals the rate rises to almost 18 percent. The LGBTI population (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex) represents 2.3-12 percent of adolescents in the United States, presenting higher rates of depression and suicide. Objective: Associate sexual orientation and the presence of depressive symptoms by adjusting different variables such as being Hispanic, bullying, cyberbullying, race, age and sex. Materials and methods: Observational cross-sectional study. Data was collected from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRSS) developed in the United States in 2017. Participants were randomly selected, including males and females, who were coursing nine through twelve grade from all public, Catholic, and private schools in all of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, having a total population of 11,950 respondents. Participants who responded as bisexual, not being sure of their sexual orientation and those who did not respond were excluded. The independent variable was sexual orientation (heterosexual/ homosexual). The dependent variable was the presence of depressive symptoms. The covariates were age, race, gender, Hispanic, bullying, and cyberbullying. A descriptive, bivariate analysis and unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were used, calculating the odds ratio (OR) and 95 percent confidence intervals (CI). Results: Homosexual population compared with heterosexuals, was about three times more likely to present depressive symptoms (adjusted OR 2.78; 95 percent CI 2.20, 3.53). An association was established with being Hispanic (OR 1.28; 95 percent CI 1.16, 1.41), bullying (OR 2.37, 95 percent CI 2.11, 2.67) and cyberbullying (OR 2.52; 95 percent CI 2.21, 2.87) with a higher probability of presenting depressive symptoms.en
