| dc.description | In the USA, 31.5% of adolescents between 11 and 18 years of age are overweight, and 7.4% suffer from sexual abuse. A secondary analysis of the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System database was analyzed to search for an association between distortion of body image and sexual abuse. Multivariate logistic regression was used, controlling for different variables. Adjusted and unadjusted odds ratios and their 95% CIs were calculated. Thirty-four percent of the respondents reported a distortion of their body image, 8% reported suffering from sexual abuse, and 74% were women. The participants with distortion were 1.29 times more likely to have suffered sexual abuse than those without. Those who reported drug use were almost three times more likely to have body weight perception distortion. Those who reported beginning their sexual life at 11 years old or less were 15.5 times more likely to suffer sexual abuse, as well to report adolescent bullying (OR 2.99). Nonheterosexuals reported having been abused 2-4 times more often than heterosexual has. The distortion of one’s body image significantly increases the likelihood of sexual abuse. | en |
