Descripción : In the present study, an alternative to the problem of solid waste generation was proposed through the elaboration of a Consumer Responsibility Manual based on the principle of waste hierarchy, to decrease the amount of waste generated by an average person. As a first point, an analysis of the consumption trend was carried out in 25 homes in the Metropolitan District of Quito, through the results obtained from the generation per capita, determining that the average value of the CPG of the sample is 0.45 kg inhab day, value below the average generation in Ecuador, which is 0.58 kg of solid waste per day according to INEC (2015). It was determined that the homes that generated the greatest amount of waste were those that were made up of a greater number of members, as well as those that were located in more urbanized residential areas. With this background, a manual was prepared for the consumer to avoid or generate less waste, following the principles of the waste hierarchy and applying the methodology proposed by the Deming cycle; plan, do, verify and act, through which different activities and suggestions are raised about; how to make a conscious purchase, what waste to reuse and how to do it, how to start recycling at home, among others. In addition, each of the principles establishes indicators to measure the achievement of the planned objectives and determines the activities to be carried out if they are not met. It was concluded that the principle of greatest importance is the principle of prevention of product consumption and that the separation of waste at the source is the basis for their comprehensive and efficient management.
