Descripción : This journalistic research is an analysis of the existing problems that revolve around the access, protection and conservation of genetic resources, that is, the organisms that exercise control over biodiversity in Ecuador. Biopiracy is an illegal practice that has been carried out in megadiverse countries such as Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Brazil, among others. This research was synthesized in an academic report covering the definition, legislation, cases of biopiracy, country projects and interviews with different characters related to the topic. In 2016, the Intellectual Property Institute currently (Secretariat for Intellectual Rights), produced a first biopiracy report in which results were obtained on patents and patent applications for access to resources Ecuadorian genetics. He identified that there are no permits of any kind for the 16 species of the 128 patents Ecuadorian that were registered around the world. According to the World Health Organization, ´75% of drugs sold in the United States are based on natural substances from countries of great biological diversity´. There Regulations are in place to control cases of biopiracy, but since there are several entities in charge of the research and procurement process of genetic resources, it has not been possible to carry out effective actions to solve this problem. In addition, the research concludes that universities and national agencies are carrying out with genetic resources in order to know and enhance the biodiversity of Ecuador.
