Resumen : El veganismo es una ideología ejercida a través de un estilo de vida que rechaza cualquier tipo de producto que sea de origen animal, sean alimentos, bienes de aseo, ropa o maquillaje...
Descripción : Veganism is an ideology exercised through a lifestyle that rejects any type of product originated from animals, whether it’d be food, toiletries, clothing or makeup. This movement seeks to eliminate animal cruelty and encourage a healthier diet. Since 2012, veganism has proliferated worldwide. This research aims to demonstrate what the current situation of veganism is in the country. It will depict its characteristics and the social groups that promote it such as several organizations that fight for animal rights (ADLA, Libera Ecuador, Movimiento Animalista Nacional). Also, the information will be contextualized with worldwide veganism data and the debates that exist about the positive and negative effects that a plant-based diet can have on human health. This investigation will also analyze the economic aspect of maintaining a vegan ideology, since the plant-based diet has been commonly categorized as "elitist". This occurs due to the fact that products marketed as "vegan" have higher costs than those derived from animal products because there is not much demand for these, therefore, not all the population has access to this type of food. It will be examined if this theory adjusts to the reality of the country. Also, cases of people who have followed a vegan diet for different periods of time will be shared to learn more about their way of thinking and how they lead this lifestyle, both in Ecuador and other parts of the world like Australia. Finally, some of the findings and conclusions of the research will be expressed, like the different currents within the animal movement, the risk of being informed by unreliable sources about nutritional issues and the lack of importance given to vitamin B12 in Ecuador.
