| Resumen : | En el Ecuador, el Síndrome de Down (SD) está considerado dentro del grupo de las diversas discapacidades mentales, físicas, intelectuales y auditivas. Por ello no existen datos específicos sobre este síndrome en particular. Sin embargo, según datos de genetistas que han realizado investigaciones en el país, hasta el año 2011 se registraron 8 000 personas con Síndrome de Down, de ellos el 48,24 por ciento correspondía a mujeres y el 51,76 por ciento a hombres poner. Se calcula que actualmente deberían existir cerca de 10 000 personas con SD. Los estudios realizados por genetistas del país también mostraron que este síndrome se da en 1 por 500 a 1 por 550 nacidos vivos, es decir, es mucho más frecuente que se de este síndrome en Ecuador que en el resto del mundo. El 40 por ciento de casos en el país se da en madres jóvenes, de entre 20 a 25 años. Esta investigación periodística propone conocer la situación actual del Síndrome de Down en el Ecuador y cuáles son las problemáticas que han enfrentado estas personas en el campo educativo. El acercamiento investigativo realizado se basó en la aplicación de una metodología cualitativa que tuvo a la entrevista, entrevista a profundidad, observación y a los relatos de vida como técnicas centrales. Se consideraron los puntos de vista y testimonios de autoridades vinculadas con el manejo del ámbito educativo en el país; representantes de fundaciones e instituciones especializadas en educación para personas con SD; así como, a representantes de colegios de educación regular que afirman tener espacios de educación inclusiva. Se incluyeron además testimonios y perspectivas de especialistas de la salud relacionados con el diagnóstico de este síndrome y con terapias diversas para mejorar su calidad de vida, así como, las experiencias de madres de niños con SD. |
| Descripción : | In Ecuador, Down Syndrome (DS) is considered within the group of diverse mental, physical, intellectual and hearing disabilities. Therefore, there are no specific data on this syndrome in particular. However, according to data from geneticists who have conducted research in the country, up to the year 2011 there were 8,000 people with Down syndrome, of which 48.24 percent were women and 51.76 percent were men. It is estimated that there should currently be around 10,000 people with DS. The studies carried out by the geneticist also showed that this syndrome occurs in 1 per 500 to 1 per 550 live births, it is much more frequent that this syndrome is found in Ecuador than in the rest of the world. 40 percent of cases in the country occur in young mothers, between 20 to 25 years. This journalistic investigation aims at analyzing the current situation of Down Syndrome in Ecuador and the problems these people have to face in the educational field. The investigative approach was based on the application of a qualitative methodology, interview and life stories are the central techniques. The points of view and testimonies of authorities, linked to the management of the educational field in the country, were considered; representatives of foundations and institutions specializing in education for people with DS; as well as, representatives of regular education schools that claim to have spaces for inclusive education. This research also includes testimonies and perspectives from health specialists related to the diagnosis of this syndrome, and various therapies to improve their quality of life, as well as the experiences of mothers of children with DS. |
