Hyperbilirubinemia or neonatal jaundice is a very common disease worldwide in newborns. It can be classified as physiological jaundice or pathological jaundice. It is necessary to evaluate the risk factors, the clinical and measurement of total serum bilirubin to predict if a newborn is highly likely to have neurological complications. To identify the sex and gestational age in which it is more frequent that neonatal jaundice occurs within the Hospital of Specialties of the Armed Forces No. 1, Quito Ecuador between 2016, 2017 and 2018, the literature review reveals that about 70 percent of full-term newborns have this condition and that only 60 percent of preterm infants suffer from it. Information on the occurrence of neonatal jaundice is unknown according to subclassification with respect to gestational age and in correlation with sex. It is a non-experimental, descriptive, qualitative-quantitative and retrospective study, without bioethical risk factors. The variables evaluated are neonatal jaundice, sex and gestational age of newborns. It is a retrospective data collection since it was a collection of information through review of medical records, tabulated in the Excel program and analyzed with the help of the EPI INFO program. The universe studied was 1688 infants within the HE1, of which 120 were diagnosed with neonatal jaundice, which represents 7.10 percent of the general population. Of these 120 infants, 55 percent were male and 45 percent female. The gestational age at which it was most frequently reported was the term 68 percent, premature 31 percent and post-term 1 percent newborns, compared with the subclassification of the gestational age in which the most frequent group They were newborns at an early term, followed by late preterm infants. The most frequent sex that reports neonatal jaundice is the male sex and the most frequent gestational age is the preterm newborn.en
