Being the metabolic profile, a diagnostic tool not disseminated in Ecuador, empirical or inefficient methods have been used in the country to balance the alterations of the transition period. Because of this, the objective of this study was to determine the values of the metabolic profile during the prepartum, and postpartum periods in high-producing dairy cattle at Hacienda Miraflores Bajo número 4 (Tambillo-Ecuador). From a population of 281 cattle eight high-producing cattle were selected using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, to which venipuncture of the coccygeal vein was performed 15 days before the most probable date of delivery in order to measure in the field beta-hydroxybutyrate and send to LABVET laboratory a sample for the measurement of glucose, urea, triglycerides, cholesterol, creatinine, total proteins, hemoglobin, ALT, AST, GGT and albumin, repeating the sampling on the 42nd postpartum day, being 20 days before the first postpartum service. Descriptive statistics were applied, and the H value was calculated per period, where it was determined that glucose, triglycerides, ALT and hemoglobin presented deficiency in the prepartum, while triglycerides, ALT, GGT and hemoglobin presented deficiency in the postpartum, at the time it was observed an excess of beta-hydroxybutyrate. With a 95 percent confidence interval, at test was performed to established if there existed a significative difference between the values of each metabolite obtained in the prepartum and postpartum, where AST (p-value 0.031), creatinine (p-value 0.038) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (p-value 0.000) were found to differ significantly, while the rest of the metabolites analyzed didn´t. It is concluded that the animals sampled had a negative energy balance in the transition period, the same one that caused an alteration in the energetic, proteinic and enzymatic pathway, exposing animals to a great metabolic effort.en
