The objective of this paper is to explain how the trade deficit in Ecuador has an influence on the efficiency of the bank portfolio as measured by the maximum return gap – defined as the distance between current and theoretical maximum portfolio returns – of local banks. The study is based on Markowitz is Theory of Portfolios (1952), who proposes maximizing return with a constant real risk. The methodology used is based on a time series model using the Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (ARCH) method. The explanatory variables used are: bank liquidity, profitability, solvency, and a binary variable indicating the presence of a sustained trade deficit. The data was compiled from monthly statistics collected by the Superintendency of Banks and Insurance and the Central Bank of Ecuador for the period 2007-2017. The results obtained confirm the hypothesis; the presence of a sustained external deficit forces the largest banks in the Ecuadorian financial system to be more efficient in the placement of credit.en
