Descripción : Xylazine is a drug widely used drug in veterinary medicine, especially in large animals such as horses and cattle. Nowadays, this drug is being used substantially in small animals medicine, such as cats and dogs. However, there is not enough information about xylazines’ effects in healthy canines. The aim of this paper, was to determine if xylazine’s effect, as a member of the alpha 2 adrenergic family, creates a hyperglycemic effect in healthy canines. This is a non-randomized, crossover clinical study, using an Intention-to-Treat analysis, the population was 115 canines in 11 months, and the sample were 10 healthy canines that underwent two dental prophylaxis. These individuals were in, both, the control and the treatment group. In the control group, an anesthetic protocol without xylazine was applied, whereas in the treatment group xylazine was applied. The second intervention (treatment group) had a wash-out period of at least 15 days. During the second dental prophylaxis, 5 blood samples were taken to measure the glucose by a spectrophotometric method. Through Anova, it was posible to verify that there were significant differences, resulting in a pvalue of 0.064 in the control group, and a p-value of <.001 in the treatment group. This means that the treatment presents significant differences by the use of xylazine, causing a hyperglicemic effect in healthy canines.
