Resumen : La contaminación atmosférica origina efectos nocivos en la salud humana a nivel mundial. Uno de los contaminantes más perjudiciales del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito es el PM2.5 (material particulado menor que 2.5 μm)...
Descripción : Atmospheric pollution causes harmful effects on human health worldwide. One of the most harmful pollutants in Metropolitan District of Quito, Ecuador, is PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm). PM2.5 is one of the pollutants that has been monitored from 2003, through an atmospheric monitoring network, that is shaped by nine long-term monitoring stations in the city and in the valleys administered by the Secretaría de Ambiente. PM2.5 exceeds the permissible limits of the World Health Organization (10 μg/m3) and the Ecuadorian Standard of Air Quality (15 μg/m3), however, monitoring stations do not measure concentrations at the street level, which are generally 2.5 greater than those granted by the Secretaría de Ambiente. Due to this reason, the objective of this study is to measure PM2.5 concentrations at the street level and at the same time record the traffic intensity provided by Google Maps Traffic and also GPS coordinates in real time, as well as record the number of vehicles that circulate in the Jipijapa and La Mariscal parishes of Quito, Ecuador, in order to estimate atmospheric pollution by PM2.5. Two study areas were delimited in the two parishes which were covered with the Microdust Pro equipment (PM2.5 concentration meter) and a mobile phone with Google Maps Traffic and Traffic applications (application developed by the research group SI2 of UDLA that register altitude, latitude, longitude and intensity of traffic in real time). The results show the average concentrations of PM2.5 during the week and on weekends where very different. Additionally, it was found that as long as there is a greater presence of vehicles on the streets of the city, the concentration of PM2.5 are higher. Finally, maps of atmospheric pollution that describe the concentrations and dispersion of fine particulate matter in the study areas were made, allowing the identification of the points with higher and lower contamination, with the objective of implementing air quality control measures and reduction of air pollution risks to the health of citizens.
