dc.descriptionThe roses are the ornamental plants of greater production and harvested area in Ecuador, being its export an important source of income. This crop is vulnerable to the plague known as red mite (Tetranychus urticae), arthropod that causes a general deterioration in the plant, chlorosis and wilt, among other symptoms. Bacillus thuringiensis, is a bacteria recognized for producing insecticidal toxins, and is used worldwide as a biocontroller of Coleoptera, Diptera and Lepidoptera. In the present study, the evaluation of the acaricidal effect of a bioproduct of B. thuringiensis var. thuringiensis against a population of T. urticae present in roses of the Rumiñahui canton under in vitro conditions was performed. The analisys of concentration and purity of the bioproduct were carried out, where values of 1.03x108 CFU ml-1 and 99 porcent, respectively, were determined. Subsequently, bioassays were conducted, where three concentrations of the bioproduct were tested: 5, 10 and 20 g L-1 in the stages of larvae, protonymph and adult. It was determined that 5 g L-1 was the most adequate dose, as it was the lowest concentration able to preserve the acaricidal activity in the same proportion as the rest of the doses, and it was confirmed that the most vulnerable stages (mortality) to the bioproduct were the larval (80.66 porcent ) and protonymphal (68.54 porcent); in contrast to the controls (8.02 and 23.61 porcent, respectively). On the other hand, it was observed that the eggs and adults of the mite are not susceptible to the microorganism, given that the percentages of hatching and inhibition of hatching of eggs did not vary with respect to the control; and that mortality in adults did not change either. However, in adults there was a significant decrease in the oviposition activity index; recognizing this as a subletal effect. In addition, the Cry 1Ba2, Cry 2Aa and Cry 4A genes were detected in the bacteria through PCR and sequencing, confirming their entomopathogenic potential. The results obtained prove that Bacillus thuringiensis var. thuringiensis has a larvicidal and nymphycidal effect for T. urticae under in vitro conditions, therefore, it has a potential to be used in integrated pest management programsen
